Overlooked Nears Routes

The Playground Area is one of the most approachable and enjoyable sections of the Sourland bouldering scene. True to its name, the area contains a dense collection of climbable boulders scattered through the forest, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring problems of varying difficulty. The setting is classic Sourland—massive diabase blocks surrounded by oak and maple woodland, with short approaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Many climbers begin their exploration of the preserve here because of the concentration of moderate problems and the opportunity to move from boulder to boulder without long hikes. The area showcases the unique geology that makes Sourland one of the premier bouldering destinations in New Jersey, with rough stone, intricate movement, and natural landings tucked among the trees.

Devil’s Half Acre is one of the most iconic and visually striking areas within Sourland Mountain Preserve. The zone consists of a sprawling boulder field filled with enormous blocks, talus formations, and narrow passages that create a rugged, almost otherworldly landscape. Climbers are drawn to the area for its classic problems, including well-known lines such as The Wave, The Cling, and Piston, while hikers often visit simply to experience the impressive rock formations. The boulder field sits within a heavily wooded section of the preserve and offers a sense of remoteness despite being only a short hike from the trailhead. The combination of giant glacially exposed diabase boulders, technical climbing, and dramatic scenery has made Devil’s Half Acre one of the defining destinations of Sourland Mountain Preserve.
